Our Tree Felling Methods

There are various ways in which we can dismantle your tree. Firstly, this is always undertaken after assessment in a safe and controlled way by our experienced arborists. Our tree felling techniques are detailed below:

Directional Tree Felling

We use this technique to fell trees where precision is needed with the fall. It is a long-practiced technique used by tree surgeons to remove a tree as a single unit. To begin with, a directional notch is made to determine the direction of fall. Then the fell is completed with the tree felling cut. Between these two cuts is the hinge, which directs the tree down to the ground towards the planned directional target in a safe way. This process certainly requires professional equipment, vast experience and meticulous focus. Our qualified tree surgeons always perform a site risk assessment to determine the best directional notch, cuts and hinge, for a safe and controlled fall.

Sectional Tree Felling

Sectional tree felling can be the only option where a tree cannot be felled in a single unit. Our reasons are generally due to limited space or a risk to property. The operation of sectional felling to remove trees can take more time than other tree works but offers much more precision and control.

Firstly, one of our tree care specialists will access the highest and safest point of the tree and install their equipment. They will then decide where to start dismantling – this is usually the lowest branch. All the cut material is lowered to the ground with a great deal of care and precision to the ground crew. This process then gets repeated until all the side branches are removed. After that we start to remove the stem in sections. Once cut, the climber will push the cut section off the top and it will then be under the expert control of the ground crew.

Three Stage Subsidence Avoidance Tree Felling

When removing a tree, we need to assess the impact the removal will have on the surrounding area. In some situations, it’s not possible to remove a tree all at once. For example, the most common reason for this is when a full removal will cause subsidence damage to surrounding properties.

Many properties in Sussex have foundations that are built into clay-based soil. Clay is a cohesive soil and consists of very small particles that bind together when mixed with water. Clay soils are able to absorb moisture that causes them to swell, as well as give up moisture that causes them to shrink.

Trees take in moisture through their roots to replace the moisture that evaporates through the foliage. As a result, tree roots can spread many meters in search of moisture and there’s no rule as to how far they will spread.

Given these points, if a tree is removed within this environment all at once, then the water that the roots have been absorbing will be returned to the clay soil. As the clay absorbs the extra water left by the absence of the root it will expand. Therefore, this can have a disastrous effect on the foundations of your home because the clay expands and causes movement.

What do you do? Your tree may have been there longer than your house has been there. Your tree may be doing damage to your house, but by taking it out you may cause further damage. The solution is three stage subsidence avoidance tree felling.

Firstly, one of our fully qualified tree surgeons will perform an assessment on your tree and its surroundings. If our report shows that a full tree removal will pose a risk to your property we will perform the tree felling process in 3 stages. The method takes around 2 years to complete fully. We fell your tree in 3 parts to control the amount of water that is let back into your soil, giving it time to adjust safely without subsidence risk. In the first stage we will take the top part of your tree away, secondly the middle and finally the root section.
